Structure Of A Vertical Machining Center

The core structure of a vertical machining center can be summarized into six main modules, responsible for frame support, power output, motion control, command processing, tool management, and auxiliary functions, respectively.

1. Basic Components

As the skeleton of the entire machine, the bed, column, and worktable are made of high-strength cast iron and undergo aging treatment to eliminate internal stress, ensuring the machine tool maintains rigidity under static loads and cutting forces, effectively reducing accuracy deviations caused by machining vibration.

2. Spindle Components

The core of the drive system includes the spindle box, motor, and bearing assembly. Electric spindle technology has become mainstream. Its speed can reach tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, and stepless speed regulation is achieved through vector control, balancing the high torque requirements of roughing and the high surface quality requirements of finishing.

3. Feed Transmission System

A precision motion chain consisting of a servo motor, ball screw, and guide rails: the ball screw transmission error is controlled within ±3μm; the guide rails can be either rolling or hydrostatic structures-rolling types are suitable for high-speed, light-load operations, while hydrostatic types reduce friction and ensure smooth movement during heavy cutting through oil film support.

4. CNC System

Using systems from brands such as FANUC and SIEMENS as the control center, a built-in PLC module coordinates the actions of various mechanisms. The operating interface supports ISO standard G-code programming, and some systems are equipped with 3D tool compensation functionality, which can correct machining trajectory errors in real time.

5. Automatic Tool Changer

Disc-type tool magazines typically have 24-40 tool positions. The tool changing robot uses a cam-linked mechanism, reducing tool changing time to less than 1.5 seconds. Models without a tool changing robot directly retrieve tools from the spindle; this simplifies the structure but limits tool magazine capacity and is commonly found in small machining centers.
